Conservation

Getting a book repaired

Whether you have one book or a whole library then you are in safe hands; we will guide you through the options available and help you to decide on the best course of action. Our approach is based on sympathetic repairs rooted in a deep knowledge of historic bookbindings; we aim to preserve as much original material as possible, but we will taylor our treatments to suit you and your book. Choice of materials is fundamental to good conservation, therefore every effort is made to source high quality materials with known ageing properties.

Customers range from national museums, libraries and universities, to private individuals. Previous clients include: The National Trust, The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and several Oxford Colleges. Please see our gallery for some examples of our past projects.

Getting a quote

Repairing old books is a complex process with no standard treatments or prices. An indication of time/cost involved can be given if photographs are provided; however, to provide the best service, it is advised that we see the items in person. Appointments can be made at the Worcestershire studio, or alternatively Arthur is happy to arrange visits. Alternative treatment options can be provided to suit the use of each item and the budget available.

Books are insured up to the value of £100,000 whilst in the studio and in transit.
